Ahrntal Valley Customs and Culture

Handed down, preserved and enhanced

Welltis pan ins blaibm und awi hoagaschtn?” The Toul (Ahrntal Valley) has its very own language – the Teldra dialect. Even as a German-speaking non-local the dialect can sometimes be difficult to follow, even though it is “only” a regional variation of standard German. Nevertheless, it is always nice to listen to and above all unique. The sentence at the beginning of this text means “Do you want to stay here and chat for a while?”, which simultaneously underlines the warmth with which people are welcomed here in the valley. Some words, which originated in the valley’s rural past, are noticeably disappearing, whilst the dialect endures with newly coined expressions. Just like the visible, cultural heritage of the valley, such as the mighty Taufers Castle, the visitor mine in Prettau, the artisanal carvings and lace-making, the menus with the valley’s own delicacies and the cheese. Experience the Ahrntal Valley’s customs and culture in historical buildings, in themed museums, at events or when you peek over the shoulders of craftsmen and women or food producers in their workshops.
