The nature protection act applicable in South Tyrol and the framework laws on protected areas provide for the general protection of naturally occurring, wild animals. These are the species of animal listed in Appendix IV of the European Habitats Directive and are also those that live in protected areas. Animals may not be captured, destroyed, killed or injured. Eggs, nesting sites, reproduction and resting sites must be left untouched by people. Moreover, it is forbidden to trade in wild animals or to release non-native species.
